This one day training course is invaluable for people with little or no experience of media interviews, the main emphasis of exercises are tailored to your organisation and current issues. It is practical and includes ‘as for real’ situations with working journalists.  The result? You leave fully prepared to meet the media.

The Essential Media Training course is aimed at people who have little or no experience of TV and radio interviews. The main emphasis of this one day course is practical, including interviews with real journalists. 

The subject and specific questions are directly related to your organisation and to real current issues relevant to your field. All interviews are played back so that we can help you see and hear opportunities for improvement. You leave fully prepared to meet the media.

  • Background briefings on broadcast interviewing, the demands of radio and television news and guidelines to broadcast news selection.
  • The Mechanics of TV and Radio News.
  • How to take advantage of broadcasting opportunities.
  • TV and Radio interviews: effective techniques 
  • How to prepare and deliver credible and authoritative interviews.
  • Advice on voice, performance, pace, style and projection.
  • Gain Radio and Television interview experience ‘as for real’ in a radio and television studio.
  • TV interviews – interview preparation – Do’s and don’ts for TV studios. 
  • Interviews face to face and direct to camera
  • Interviews sitting down and standing up – indoors and outdoors
  • How to craft your quote for TV news reports and how to talk to the camera while standing up
  • Professional advice on make-up, style, and grooming for television from a Television Make-up Artist.

After undertaking this training you will leave fully prepared to meet the media.

You will be confident and able to deliver effective radio and television interviews.

You will have gained essential television and radio interview experience ‘as for real’ with studio interviews and location interviews

You will have expert insider guidance on techniques for preparation and delivery of effective broadcast interviews

Before the course we need you to provide information on two current topics that you wish to be interviewed about on radio and television during the course. 

Background information can include internal briefings, press releases and/or press cuttings.  You will be interviewed as though these are real news stories happening on the day of the course.  

These courses are run by TV News London’s Managing Director and expert media trainer, Roz Morris, who has had a long career as a journalist, broadcaster and media trainer. 

Roz has worked as a reporter and presenter for BBC TV and radio, ITV, and RTE, as well as a writer and correspondent for The Guardian, The Observer, The Northern Echo and The Evening Standard. She is currently a blogger on media issues for The Huffington Post UK.

If the course is at full capacity Roz shall be joined by Jon Kaye.

Jon is an experienced radio presenter and media trainer. He presents news and sports programmes and bulletins for BBC Three Counties Radio and other BBC and commercial radio stations. 

He has interviewed prominent politicians, campaigners and celebrities for over two decades. For several years he was a presenter of live news and talk programmes for London’s LBC and a newsreader for Independent Radio News and Classic FM. 

He has presented and produced major current affairs programmes for the BBC throughout the UK, was Head of Presentation for a London commercial radio station and a communications consultant for a major charity.

In 2014 one of his radio programmes was nominated for the prestigious Sandford St Martin Trust Award. He has extensive experience as a media trainer. He has also worked for BBC Radio Merseyside and BBC Wiltshire.

Part of the course will be delivered in a meeting room briefing giving you a Broadcast Media Overview. This will cover:

  • The Mechanics of TV and Radio News.
  • How to take advantage of broadcasting opportunities.
  • TV and Radio interviews: effective techniques –
  • How to prepare and deliver credible and authoritative interviews.
  • Advice on voice, performance, pace, style and projection.

You will then be given practical Radio and TV interview exercises to do ‘as for real’ and then these will be reviewed and critiqued. You will cover Radio interviews in the morning and TV interviews in the afternoon. These will be recorded in the radio studio and TV studio.

There will be breaks between practical exercises and a sandwich lunch break in the room.

Please wear something you would wear if you were going to be interviewed on TV or Radio. Dressing down is not appropriate for this course. 

Please avoid any shirts/ blouses with stripes as this causes cameras to strobe.

Also avoid any earrings and large jewellery

Feel free to bring different jackets/blazers with you to try.

The training course will take place at a training TV & Radio studio in Westminster, London.

 Victoria (20 minute walk) or short bus or taxi journey from Victoria.

After the training course we will follow up with the following actions:

  • You will be given a TV News London Top Tips Card – all the advice you need on a wallet sized card
  • Each participant is provided with recordings of their interviews
  • Follow-up Report – Each person taking this course receives an individual follow-up report detailing strengths and points to watch as well as advice for the future
  • Each participant will be sent a Course Certificate
